How to Feng Shui Your Bedroom the Eco Way
The art of feng shui and eco-friendly decorating are very compatible. Feng shui is intended to open up the flow of energy in your home, bringing a sense of peace, harmony, and renewed energy to the inhabitants.
Eco-friendly decorating ties in with this concept, since eco-friendly interior design is intended to promote a healthy, clean indoor environment (while protecting the earth as well). Both concepts are based in nature.
The bedroom is often the room where many people want to apply the principles of green living and feng shui. Here are some ideas for using feng shui and eco-friendly techniques in decorating your bedroom.
The first step in redecorating in general and feng shui in particular is to get rid of superfluous stuff. The items you choose to keep should be kept in an organized, even decorative, manner.
Choose paints that are eco-friendly and devoid of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Use colors that are peaceful and calming, and avoid bright, garish colors or very dark tones. Some feng shui consultants recommend pink as the best bedroom color. Light blues and pale greens are also good bedroom colors.
Soft lighting is recommended in feng shui, with candles being the ideal light source. For the eco-conscious, this is good news - lower light means less energy use. Invest in natural candles that will not emit toxic elements into the air, and choose energy-efficient electric lights that are low voltage.
Interestingly, plain white sheets are not generally recommended in feng shui. In the Chinese culture from which feng shui comes, white cloth is associated with death shrouds. Pink or peach-colored sheets, or white sheets printed with flowers, are considered joyous and peaceful colors. Natural cotton or silk are recommended for feng shui and for eco-friendly decorating. Make sure the dyes are vegetable-based and natural. Sheets should be soft and comfortable.
Simple, sustainable furniture is recommended for green decorating and feng shui. Choose sustainable wood and do not store anything underneath the furniture (including the bed). If you need that space for storage, put items in attractive, well-organized boxes. Arrange furniture so that spaces are open and energy can flow freely over and around furniture.
Having water in view is recommended in feng shui. To keep this option eco-friendly, choose an indoor water feature that re-circulates so that it does not waste water. Make sure that the fountain or water feature is made from natural materials.
